CAT | Gardening

We recently moved into a new home. And when I say new, I mean it in the most literal sense. The construction on the house had only been completed a few weeks back. One of the more unexpected things about the experience was noticing how barren the area seemed. There seemed to be an assumption that we’d want giant expanses of lawn. We decided pretty quickly that we wanted to put in some trees, but this just raised another problem. We needed to decide on what kind of tree. We settled on getting some evergreen trees for a number of reasons. The first was that we wanted to have them look good the entire year. As the name suggests, they can be counted on to be green all the time. A winter with trees whose leaves have fallen off just seemed too depressing. Another big factor for us was the variety we could choose from. There’s a huge difference in the variety of evergreen out there. Some from coloration of the basic tree, others from the bark, and others yet from how they may or may not flower. In the end we’ve been really happy with the choice. We have fifteen scattered around our property at the moment. The change it ended up making to the view was amazing.

Consider marketing via events, locally, regionally or anywhere, to sell more products. For example, to sell more wind chimes try the following ideas.

- Get out your local publications: print magazines, newspapers, suburban news, classified ads, etc. Hunt for events – all types from home improvement shows hosted at local fairgrounds to arts and crafts shows and much more should be listed during every season of the year. Get help via a local or virtual assistant and have them research for you, listing events on an Excel spreadsheet, one page for each month of the year. Mail him or her print publications each month to research plus have the person search online for ones, too.

- Create a basic one-page letter or email to send to event hosts that asks about opportunities for you to sell there. Check space, costs and deliverable (do you get a database of attendees for following up later).

When you use a core aerator for your lawn, it lasts a lot longer and is way more effective than a spike aerator. When people use a spike aerator, they’re actually compacting their soil. The benefit is that they are allowing water to go deeper into the soil, but by making those holes in the lawn, they are also compacting it. When you use a core aerator, you are doing just the opposite. You are allowing your lawn to breathe, but you’re also removing the plugs.

In addition, core aeration allows the soil room to expand when it gets hot in the summer. A lot of lawns will turn yellow once summer comes around and the clay in the soil expands. However, if you have a well aerated lawn, then the expansion shouldn’t put too much pressure on your root system. Your grass will be a lot healthier and it will be able to grow even during the hot summer months.

One of the easiest ways to make your garden look beautiful is by purchasing pondless waterfalls. What makes these waterfalls so special is that they do not need a garden pond to function, which is perfect for any person that does not want to deal with maintaining a pond, as this can be quite a tiresome task, even if you only need to maintain a pond once a month. The way in which pondless waterfalls work is that they only need a reservoir to hold the water. You would simply need to dig a hole in the area you would like your waterfall, install the liner, place the vault inside the hole, and then fill it all with rock. From this point onwards, you have a beautiful waterfall that will continuously work. It is also possible to decorate your pondless waterfalls, and this can be easily achieved by using pondless waterfall kits, which can be found by searching one of the dedicated online pond and water garden stores.

LED Beats Other Growing Lights

There are many growing lights, but among the many growing lights out in the market, LED grow lights simply are the best. Introduced for just a couple of years in the industry of indoor farming or gardening, LED grow lights are being used by more and more indoor gardeners, especially for their hydroponics garden. And this isn’t just a fad — LED grow lights actually have some major advantages over their outdated counterparts. First of all there’s the LED grow lights amazing electrical efficiency. Compared to other grow lights, LED grow lights are very electrically efficient. This translates to saving on your electricity bills. It also has an extended lifespan, which again means you don’t have to change and purchase lights as often as if you were using regular grow lights. Again, a savings on your part. Also, the LED grow lights produce very little heat, especially when compared to the regular gr ow lights. Less heat meant less damage. These are just some reasons why LED grow lights are the best.

Indoor Worm Composting

Would you like to have the first and best tomatoes in the neighborhood this year? How about the nicest and prettiest flowers of all the front lawns? Or even the greenest grass going? Sure you could hire some to come in and spray some fertilizer or go to the store and buy some chemicals that will likely do the trick.

How about an organic method that you can easily do yourself right in your garage or basement with no chemicals and all you are going to use is material that you were going to throw out anyway? I thought you’d be interested.

Indoor worm composting is one of the best and easiest ways to make some of the best and nutrient rich compost that you’ve ever laid down on your garden, lawn, or potted plants! All you need is a good sized Rubbermaid type bin, some old newspaper, a scoop of soil from your garden, and a few thousand red wiggler worms.

Just drill some holes in the lid for air and fill the bin about 2/3 full with strips of the newspaper that you moisten to about the point of a wrung out sponge. Toss in the scoop of soil which is going to aid in the worms digestion. Then of course it’s time to add your friends, the red wigglers. Make sure to thank them because they are going to do all the work. Each day just add your organic left overs from meals to the bin. Fruits, vegetables, coffee, tea, egg shells, etc. But no meat, no spicy, and no onions. After about 90 days your bin will be full of the best compost you’ve ever added to your garden.

Having a wormery is going to be the difference between a nice garden and the best garden this year!

What is NPK

The NPK number found on all nutrient labels helps you understand the nutritional value of the plant food. Most hydroponic nutrients are designed to work in systems which have small orifices and reservoirs which hold the nutrient solution. This is important because organic nutrients are not able to sit inside of a reservoir for more than a few days without spoiling.

The NPK number refers to the Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium values in percentage form. These numbers will always be labeled in this same order. This tells the gardener how much of these three macro elements the plant food contains. This is useful for knowing which plant food works with which type of plants. Most plants which are in the vegetative stage will require high levels of nitrogen. As the plant progresses to the fruiting or flowering stage, it will require less nitrogen and begin using more phosphorus and potassium.

Cilantro Leaves Used in Cooking

Cilantro is also called Chinese Parsley or Coriander. The leaves of the coriander plant are called Cilantro Leaves and the seeds are called coriander seeds. The cilantro leaves have a pungent odor, sometimes referred to as soapy odor. The bright green leaves are commonly used in cooking in many parts of the world including Mexico, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Mediterranean, etc. Coriander seeds and leaves have very distinct flavors and cannot be substituted for each other. Whenever a recipe calls for fresh coriander or coriander leaves, the reference is made to cilantro leaves. Cilantro leaves are commonly used in Mexican and Indian recipes such as salsas and chutneys. It is also used in soups, stews, and curries. The leaves can also be minced or pureed and used in sauces and marinades. The leaves are also finely chopped and sprinkled on rice, curries, and soups as a garnish. Dried cilantro leaves are available in local grocery stores.

Whenever I think about the enormous amounts of fresh, healthy, chemical-free food my relatively two small gardens produce, it makes wonder how there could be any starvation or famine anywhere in the world. I have a plot that’s roughly 25 by 25 feet. And another nearly that big, complete with heavy duty gazebos that protect my more delicate produce.

I live in northern Minnesota, and so have a painfully short growing season of about 90 days. Yet, this year my small plots produced about six bushels of potatoes, five bushels of tomatoes, 600 onions, a few pounds of peas, 50 ears of corn, six cabbages, broccoli, one bushel of carrots, about a dozen green peppers — and did I mention to 36 squash, the strawberries, the cucumbers? And even more.

An advantage I have here in northern Minnesota is extremely rich, black, fertile soil that goes a foot deep. The soil here is amazing for growing. It looks like it came right out of a giant bag of potting soil. We use no commercial fertilizers, just cow manure we get for free from a neighbor. But the larger point I want to make about my two small gardens is the amazing amounts of food anyone can grow in a very small area, and without really working all that hard.

The tomatoes from my garden don’t taste better than store-bought tomatoes, they taste incredibly and fantastically better than anything you can buy in a regular supermarket. That’s true of everything I grow. If more people would keep a small garden of their own, there would be: a) A lot more healthy people, B) a lot of people with less stress and anxiety because gardening is so pleasant and serene and c) a lot less hunger in the world. Why don’t more people plant and tend a small garden, even people who live in urban areas? It’s a mystery.

Our local park is named ‘Independence Day Park’, as it was opened on an Independence Day celebration some years back. This park like many others is maintained by the Municipality – and you can see them working hard when their pop up gazebos are up – it means they are trimming hedges, cutting the grass and maintaining the flowerbeds. It has under its control a large number of parks, most of which are small in area, but it caters to needs of the people of that locality longing for some open space for breathing unpolluted air.

Our Independence Day Park is a bit larger in size when compared to others. Irrespective of size, all parks have the same salient features; our park has 1) a number of flowering plants, some of which sweet smell 2) full grown trees 3) a small area but with nice grass at one end for small kids to play without getting injured even if they fell down 4) a concrete path all round the park for people to walk or stroll 5) a number devices like swings, platforms with steps for sliding down from one end etc; for children to play and 6) a small area for playing Kabbadi. Powered vehicles are not allowed inside. Though there is scope for improvement these small or large parks go along way in reducing air pollution and global warming.
